April Notes

As usual, there’s not a whole lot going on with us old folk here in Geezerville. How’s that for a captivating lead-in? Really makes you eager to read on, right?

That’s my life lately.

But—things are about to change. I have begun PT and the prognosis—and the progress—are excellent. I do not have a torn rotator cuff (yay) but the tendons in my shoulder are getting pinched between the bones (“impingement”) so I need to strengthen them. It is improving already. I’m playing golf again, and there just might be quilting in my future—if I can find the muse, that is. I’m going to be better about keeping up the exercises this time. They are painful to do but they do make everything better.

Today was a perfect day for golf, I had trepidations but it went well. Until it didn’t. I took a couple of shots out of the bunker, which is hard on you to begin with. So, I took myself out of the game at hole nine. I didn’t want to push it. Incidentally, below is where I got a hole-in-one recently—hole 5 at Tijeras Creek, a very challenging course. This day my ball went into the water.

Meanwhile…

We have been dog sitting Sally. She’s a sweet girl but I don’t get quality sleep because she snores, snorkles, and scratches. I like to lie-in and read the WSJ until the need for coffee gets me out from under the covers but Sally demands my attention. It’s breakfast time and she’s hungry. She’s always hungry.

We hosted a dinner party. Just some 70-something old friends yakking it up and having fun. We laughed and told stories long into the night and everything was perfect. It’s super easy to bake salmon and asparagus, they both go in the oven at 400° for 15-18 minutes. Plus a cold rice* salad, and dessert was fruit pizza.
A good time was had by all. The weather had turned cold so we set up indoors.

In other news, we lost a dear friend to Covid. Bill and Sarah were both fully vaxxed and boosted. We met this Dallas couple while playing bridge on a cruise and became fast friends. We traveled together often and visited each other’s houses. We had a meet-up scheduled in Las Vegas when Covid hit. We miss them both.
At Cold Spring Tavern near Santa Barbara. It’s a hidden gem, and worth going out of your way if you’re ever in the area.

Delicious and Different Rice Salad

2 packages Uncle Ben’s Ready Rice, long grain & wild, prepared according to the directions. I rinsed off the seasonings (twice) before I cooked it. Let cool. Serves 6.

3/4 cup pecans or slivered almonds, toasted
1-2 stalks celery, sliced
1-2 scallions, white and green parts, sliced
1/4 cup frozen peas
10-15 red or green grapes, halved
Fresh parsley, chopped

Dressing
1 Tbs balsamic vinegar
1 Teaspoon honey
1 Tbs olive oil

Toss together, salt and pepper to taste. Refrigerate. Serve cold or at room temperature. Can be made a day in advance.

I'm sorry to hear about your friends. Which one died? Surely not both of them. Covid doesn't play fair.

I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your friend. It sounds like you shared many special times together--memories last forever.
Believe me, my hat is off to you for the Sally-Sitting! Personally, I think if you could teach her to read the WSJ, she would be easier to deal with. LOL! You have earned the Parent-Dogsitting-Medal-Extraordinaire! I was sad to lose you on the goof course today---you were crushing the ball, but, unfortunately, you were also apparently crushing your shoulder (OUCH!). It was fun while you lasted---take care of yourself and much aloha!

The photos of everyone having fun at your dinner party made me smile. Sure looked like fun! Glad your body is on the mend and that there may be some quilting in your future. What terrible luck for your friends; I'm so sorry. We aren't completely out of the woods yet.
